Somers Crew 1104
Applicants are now being considered for Crew 1104’s Philmont Trek
Philmont arrival date: July 8, 2010
Philmont departure date: July 20, 2010
Allow about 2 days before and after trek for travel and acclimatization activities.
Crew Positions Available: In the recent Philmont lottery, Crew 1104 was awarded 2 trek crews, 12 persons per crew, including a maximum of 4 adults (over age 21) per crew.
Philmont: Philmont is a 215 square mile Scout Ranch located in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of Northeast New Mexico. Ten day backpack treks of 35 to 110 miles are chosen based on the interests of the crew members. Travel is through varied terrain and at elevations up to 12,441 ft, with stops at wilderness campsites and staffed camps having a wide range of program activities. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Other Activities: The crews can also decide on pre- and post- trip activities while traveling to and from Philmont. Arriving early helps to acclimate to the higher elevation. Travel options can include flying into Colorado Springs, with possibilities for side trips to Pike’s Peak, whitewater rafting, caves, and parks.
Eligibility: The trek is organized under the co-ed Venturing Crew 1104. We will draw the members from current Crew 1104 members, Troops 376 and 228, local Venturing Crews, and local girls interested in Venturing. Other criteria will include:
· Youth must be 14-20 at the time of the trek and registered with Crew 1104. If you are already registered with Boy Scouts in another unit, you will co-register with 1104.
· Possess a maturity level appropriate for functioning in a co-ed group.
· Meet Philmont health criteria and be capable of the physical demands of backpacking at altitude.
· Pay all required Philmont fees. Pay all required Crew 1104 fees.
· Participate in any fundraising efforts decided on by the group.
· Participate in all mandatory Philmont training activities.
· Establish and maintain a personal training regimen.
Cost Estimates: In 2007, Troop 376 spent about $1400 per person traveling as a 9-member crew. Increases in airfares may offset any efficiencies of a larger group, so use that amount for initial planning purposes. Besides the monetary costs, this trek requires a serious commitment of time, for planning, training, and crew familiarization.
Applications, Deposits, and Payments: To be considered for this trek, please submit the attached form and a $50 deposit to Carl Gebauer by January 22nd. If you cannot do so by this date, please call with your intentions. Trip costs will be collected in approximately four payments spread out between now and March 2010, as decided by the crew advisors. This will include the Philmont fees that are due in two payments of $285, on Oct 1, 2009 and March 1, 2010.
The crews may decide to hold fundraising events to defray some of the trip costs.
Crew Meetings: Crew 1104 will meet the Thursday Jan 22 at 6:30pm in the Somers Library Program Room to discuss the Phimont trip with all who are interested. Additional Philmont meetings will be scheduled as needed. Information will also be posted to the Crew’s website, the “Crew 1104” Yahoo group. Regular Crew meetings are the first Thursday of the month at 6:30pm (tbd location, check the website)
